About the position

King County's Department of Public Defense is looking to fill one or more Legal Assistants who will perform legal office support tasks. The ideal candidates will be able to exercise good independent judgment, and apply office guidelines, legal procedures, work methods, court rules, and applicable laws. This recruitment (2025FF23723) will be used to fill Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) or Special Duty Assignment (SDA) positions, and placement may occur within any of our divisions, at either Seattle or Kent. It will also be used to create an eligibility pool to fill additional TLT or SDA vacancies the next three months. Assignments are anticipated to last for up to 24 months but have the ability to be extended or end early based on business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide range of advanced administrative duties, both in the office and remotely, and word processing of complex and/or confidential materials.
  • Identifies prior division involvement with individuals listed in discovery and provides detailed descriptions for conflict analysis.
  • Opens and distributes cases to assigned attorneys.
  • Maintains Master Court Calendar with supervisor and attorney supervisor.
  • Verifies monthly reports, closes client case files, and processes closed files daily.
  • Obtains criminal history information from jails or prisons.
  • Maintains professional and accurate records, including confidential reports and information.
  • Accurately docket and enter case assignment information.
  • Processes debits and credits daily into case management system.
  • Requests case credit and assignments from the Director's Office.
  • Provides excellent customer service as the first line of contact with DPD clients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be onsite at the work locations at least three days a week.
  • Demonstrates and practices cultural sensitivity when engaging a diverse population.
  • Uses professional communication skills and demonstrates empathy with DPD's clients.
  • Monitors and responds to voicemail and email messages.
  • Greets clients and visitors upon arrival to the office.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience as an office or administrative assistant.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 20-pound boxes.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or ability to travel around King County.
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills.
  • Knowledge of advanced office equipment and software programs.
  • Knowledge of legal procedures, work methods, court rules, and applicable laws.

Nice-to-haves

  • Lived experience involving the criminal legal system.
  • Knowledge of Superior Court Management Information System (SCOMIS), Judicial Information System (JIS), and Electronic Case Records (ECR).
  • Fluency in a foreign language.
