About the position

The Legal Assistant position in the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice involves providing essential legal and administrative support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Northern District of Indiana. The role includes preparing legal documents, assisting in trial preparations, and managing case files, with opportunities for professional growth and increased responsibilities over time.

Responsibilities

  • Examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas.
  • Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation.
  • Assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents.
  • Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository.
  • Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases.
  • Tracking filing, hearing, and trials dates, and scheduling conference and interviews.
  • Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
  • Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship/Nationality is required.
  • Ability to examine and prepare legal documents accurately and efficiently.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage case files and schedules.
  • Proficiency in office software applications for document production.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a legal environment or with legal documentation is preferred.
