About the position

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Legal Assistant based in Baltimore, Maryland on an indefinite, ongoing temp basis to cover medical leave. This position is ideal for candidates with specific legal experience, particularly in bankruptcy law, but we are also open to those who may have experience in adjacent practice areas. The role involves a variety of responsibilities that are crucial to the effective management of bankruptcy cases and client interactions. As a Legal Assistant, you will be responsible for carrying out initial client intake procedures and drafting essential client documents for bankruptcy proceedings. You will create legal documents such as appeals, motions, and petitions, ensuring that all filings are accurate and timely. Additionally, you will manage, organize, and maintain both paper and electronic filing systems, which is vital for the smooth operation of the legal office. Your role will also include conducting legal research under the direction of an attorney, focusing on bankruptcy laws and relevant case research. You will be expected to communicate effectively with courts, trustees, and opposing counsel regarding the specifics of each case, maintaining a professional demeanor at all times. Furthermore, you will maintain the bankruptcy calendar to ensure that all deadlines are met and offer litigation support during court proceedings as needed. This position requires a high level of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out initial client intake procedures and draft client documents for bankruptcy proceedings.
  • Create legal documents such as appeals, motions, and petitions.
  • File electronic court documents for bankruptcy cases.
  • Manage, organize, and maintain documents in paper/electronic filing systems.
  • Conduct legal research under attorney directive, including bankruptcy laws and case research.
  • Communicate with courts, trustees, and opposing counsel on the specifics of each case.
  • Maintain the bankruptcy calendar and ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Offer litigation support during court proceedings.

Requirements

  • An associate or bachelor's degree or certificate program in legal studies (preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a paralegal, ideally in bankruptcy law.
  • Proficient in the use of legal software for bankruptcy filings.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent research and report-writing skills.
  • Flexibility in schedule during peak times.
