About the position

The Legal Research Assistant at the Oklahoma Tax Commission plays a crucial role in providing technical legal assistance to attorneys within the Legal Division. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including conducting legal research, preparing legal documents, and assisting attorneys in the preparation and filing of court actions. The Legal Research Assistant will be expected to perform administrative and secretarial support, which includes composing and preparing various legal documents, correspondence, and forms. Additionally, the role requires the ability to research legal data and prepare drafts of briefs and arguments, ensuring that all legal materials are accurate and well-organized. In this position, the Legal Research Assistant will also conduct field investigations to verify the accuracy of data and facts, locate and assemble legal materials for use in docketing cases, and answer inquiries concerning legal issues from the public and agency personnel. Maintaining a law library and developing files on research resources are also key responsibilities. The role demands exceptional attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle confidential work with discretion. The Legal Research Assistant must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks to meet deadlines, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The position offers a competitive salary range of $56,000 to $60,000 per year, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, and a retirement savings plan with a generous match. The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with core hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and may require some flexibility based on the agency's needs. Telework may also be required, necessitating a secure internet connection and a dedicated phone line during scheduled working hours.

Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative and secretarial support for attorneys.
  • Compose and prepare various legal documents, correspondence, and forms.
  • Research legal data; prepare rough drafts and/or final forms of briefs and arguments.
  • Conduct field investigations to ensure accuracy of data and facts.
  • Locate and assemble legal material for use in docketing of cases.
  • Assist attorneys in the preparation and filing of court actions.
  • Answer inquiries concerning legal issues from the public and agency personnel.
  • Develop and maintain files on research resources; maintain law library.
  • Screen phone calls and receive visitors; process mail and payments received.
  • Provide information or refer requestor to appropriate official; dispose of routine matters.
  • Assist in projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of eighteen semester hours from an accredited school of law; or completion of an American Bar Association approved legal research assistant program; or completion of a bachelor's degree in legal studies.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a legal secretary (preferred).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong writing skills in English.
  • Legal administrative experience.
  • Computer skills with the ability to operate standard office equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in legal studies (4 years preferred).
  • Completion of an American Bar Association program (preferred).
