About the position

Garner Corbett & Gilchrist is seeking an experienced legal secretary, paralegal, or legal assistant to support a seasoned attorney in a small law firm located in Columbia, SC. The firm primarily focuses on Plaintiff's work and handles a diverse range of cases. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and typing skills, demonstrating a strong desire to assist the attorney in achieving successful outcomes for clients. A pleasant personality and the ability to work collaboratively within a team are essential traits for this role. The position requires a self-motivated individual with a keen attention to detail. Client interaction is a significant aspect of the job, and the candidate should be comfortable engaging with clients and managing their needs. While experience in various areas of law is advantageous, a solid background in litigation and claims is a strong foundation for this role. Responsibilities

  • Assist the attorney with various legal tasks and case management.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and provide updates on case progress.
  • Prepare legal documents and correspondence as required.
  • Conduct legal research using Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis.
  • Maintain organized case files and documentation.
  • Manage scheduling and appointments for the attorney.
  • Assist in trial preparation and litigation support.
  • Provide administrative support in a law office environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.
  • Strong typing skills with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in civil litigation preferred (3 years).
  • Legal writing skills preferred (3 years).
  • 5 years of law office employment preferred.
  • Certified Notary Public status is a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
