About the position

The Legislative Assistant will support the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in its advocacy efforts towards Congress, regulatory bodies, and other advocacy groups. This role involves monitoring legislative activities, providing staff support to AAP chapters and committees, and representing AAP at various meetings. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills to effectively engage with stakeholders and assist in the development of advocacy strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Advance federal policy related to issues affecting infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and pediatricians.
  • Draft written materials to Congress, regulatory agencies, and AAP committees.
  • Proactively monitor and provide information on legislative and regulatory proposals to the Director and other AAP staff.
  • Compile background information on issues within the legislative portfolio, including summaries and analyses of different proposals.
  • Attend hearings and write reports; conduct online research through congress.gov and regulatory websites.
  • Assist with AAP advocacy efforts before Congress and regulatory agencies.
  • Attend meetings with Congressional and agency staff on AAP issues as assigned.
  • Develop advocacy strategies on AAP legislative and regulatory priorities with the Director.
  • Represent the AAP at selected regulatory government advisory committee meetings.
  • Conduct outreach to partner organizations to coordinate coalition efforts on legislative issues.
  • Assist Director with drafting and editing testimony, correspondence, and legislative amendments.
  • Track and report on the team's progress across projects to ensure timely completion.
  • Assist AAP membership with understanding legislative processes and answering inquiries on AAP policy and child health issues.
  • Develop educational and background materials for various AAP meetings.
  • Maintain relationships with Central Office staff and handle routine inquiries.
  • Gather specific information on issues as directed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • At least two years' related experience in health or federal government arena required.
  • Substantive knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Hill, federal agency, or association work desirable.
  • Experience with virtual meeting platforms (e.g., WebEx, Teams) preferred.
