About the position

The Legislative Attorney position at the Oklahoma State Senate involves providing legal expertise and support throughout the legislative process. The role requires strong legal research and writing skills, as well as effective communication abilities, to assist in crafting and navigating legislation. The attorney will work within a non-partisan team dedicated to improving the state of Oklahoma.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal review of proposed legislation by analyzing compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Conduct legal research of various federal laws, state laws, and other legal precedents.
  • Draft memoranda and bill draft language as requested.
  • Attend committee meetings and hearings to provide guidance on legal questions and procedural matters.
  • Review executive appointments that require Senate approval.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Licensed as an attorney in the State of Oklahoma.
  • Possess legal knowledge to identify potential issues in proposed legislation.
  • Knowledge of research methodology and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to multitask various projects and work under pressure of deadlines.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the legislative process and terminology is preferred but not required.
