About the position

LibertyWorks is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic team in Indianapolis, IN. This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage with flagship Rolls-Royce programs, tackling some of the most complex and intriguing technological challenges in the defense sector. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for specifying and designing critical components such as structures, shafting, bearings, and heat exchangers. Your role will encompass all aspects of hardware design, analysis, and definition, while also supporting fabrication and testing to ensure the successful delivery of LibertyWorks' products. In this position, you will ensure that component designs meet project requirements from the initial concept phase through to demonstration testing. You will lead design and analysis activities for mechanical systems hardware, capturing requirements and translating them into sub-system and component hardware specifications. Your responsibilities will include providing innovative hardware design concepts, performing trade studies to optimize designs, and creating functional and physical interfaces with other engineering teams. Additionally, you will develop hardware bills of material and collaborate across teams to integrate with the project-level product structure and configuration. You will also support the creation of engineering drawings and model-based definitions for manufacturing, ensuring that conforming hardware is procured. Your role will involve setting limits for engine and rig testing, assessing test results, and providing technical presentations and reports to deliver effective solutions. Responsibilities

  • Lead design and analysis activities for mechanical systems hardware, from requirements capture through program completion
  • Understand and cascade system requirements into sub-system and component hardware requirements, and issue requirement documents
  • Provide hardware design concepts and perform trade studies to optimize hardware including basic CADD modeling and structural analysis
  • Create and document functional and physical interfaces with other component engineers
  • Develop hardware bill of material, and collaborate across teams to integrate with the project-level product structure and configuration
  • Support creation of engineering drawings and/or model-based definition for project/manufacturing to procure conforming hardware
  • Provide limits for engine and rig testing and supporting testing including assessment of test results and tested hardware
  • Develop technical presentations and associated technical reports in the delivery of solutions

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering required at a minimum, graduating between August 2024 and August 2025
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a high-level security clearance

Nice-to-haves

  • Exceptional people and communication skills
  • Familiarity using computer aided design tools such as NX
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances (GD&T), and the creation of limit stacks
  • Familiarity with generic design processes and design methods
  • Some experience using finite element analysis tools (such as ANSYS Classic or Workbench)
  • Programming skills such as Visual Basic, Matlab, Python, PERL, C++
  • Understanding of engine assembly and testing
