About the position

The Ames Public Library is seeking a dedicated and creative Youth Services Librarian specializing in teen services. This full-time position involves leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating library collections, services, and outreach activities aimed at engaging the youth audience. The role emphasizes customer service, collection development, and community partnerships, with responsibilities that include programming and assisting customers with technology. The successful candidate will be part of the library's leadership team, contributing to daily operations and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all library users.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct customer service in the Youth Services area.
  • Research and analyze current trends and emerging technologies in librarianship.
  • Ensure building safety and security as a member of the person-in-charge (PIC) team.
  • Interpret policies and procedures for staff and public.
  • Advocate for library users to ensure a quality customer experience.
  • Identify underserved individuals and communities and seek ways to engage them.
  • Maintain expertise in library principles and best practices for specific demographics.
  • Assess customer needs to determine collections, services, and programs.
  • Create a clean, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for library users.
  • Participate in strategic planning and library-wide process improvement teams.
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive information in response to customer requests.
  • Assist in preparation and monitoring of the annual budget for collections.
  • Design programs based on customer developmental needs and interests.
  • Collaborate with community groups to plan and promote library programs.
  • Provide training to staff in reference interactions and library technology.
  • Promote activities that build information literacy skills and lifelong learning.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution or a Master's degree in a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of public library services and principles of intellectual freedom.
  • Skill in data analysis, budget preparation, and customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, with a sense of urgency and humor.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing and facilitating programming for teens.
