About the position

The Librarian position in the Asian and Middle Eastern Division focuses on acquisitions and bibliographic access, requiring proficiency in classical Tibetan and other Indic languages. The role involves cataloging materials, managing acquisitions, and providing consultation and liaison services. This is a full-time, non-supervisory position with a flexible work schedule, located in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

  • Catalogs a variety of materials in an automated cataloging environment.
  • Analyzes and organizes information and materials for library collections development.
  • Provides consultation and liaison services to library users and staff.
  • Maintains liaison with recommending officials and subject specialists to understand their needs.
  • Coordinates proper purchasing information and correct bibliographic identification.
  • Examines recommendations for acquisition to identify processing and custodial requirements.
  • Performs research in the cataloger's reference collection and online databases.
  • Recommends resolutions to problems and inconsistencies in the cataloging process.
  • Participates in formulating plans for changes and improvements to cataloging-related issues.
  • Assists in examination of incoming shipments to select items appropriate for the collections.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of classical Tibetan and other Indic languages, and Buddhism.
  • Ability to read, understand, and transliterate classical Tibetan and other Indic languages.
  • Knowledge of cataloging rules and ability to catalog and research library materials.
  • Ability to use library software applications and integrated library platforms.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships and provide consultation and liaison services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

  • Familiarity with cataloging standards and practices.
