About the position

The Library Assistant - Access Services at Bates College is responsible for performing general circulation duties, supervising student assistants, and assisting patrons with library resources and technology. This role requires evening and weekend shifts, and the assistant will ensure the smooth operation of the library's circulation and audio departments while providing support to a diverse community of users.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general circulation duties including supervising student assistants.
  • Answer questions and assist patrons with locating materials and using library resources.
  • Ensure the security of the library building at closing time.
  • Accurately check-out and check-in library materials using library software.
  • Assist patrons with research questions in the absence of reference librarians.
  • Direct patrons to materials and facilities within the library.
  • Supervise and train Public Service Student Assistants at the Circulation and Audio Service Desks.
  • Process reserve materials and assist with library signage.
  • Maintain audio/video equipment and other standard library machines.
  • Handle cash for fines from Courtesy Borrowers, Alumni, and Affiliates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in an academic library.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in serving a diverse community.
  • Ability to assist library patrons with catalog searches and library skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain collegial relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
