About the position

The Library Assistant position at the Headquarters in Battle Creek involves performing specialized library tasks that require a moderate level of difficulty and acquired knowledge. The primary responsibility of this role is to assist patrons in effectively utilizing library resources. This includes responding to requests for information both in person and over the phone at the Library Information Desk. The Library Assistant will play a crucial role in helping library users navigate electronic information resources, such as GALILEO and the Internet, as well as assisting them with word processing computers. Additionally, the assistant will guide patrons in selecting materials and locating information from various library resources, including books, periodicals, and other materials. The role also entails using both electronic and printed information resources to find appropriate and accurate information that meets the needs of library users. The Library Assistant will assist patrons in using the cataloging system and the computer catalog, as well as help them request materials through interlibrary loan. Other responsibilities may include checking in and out library materials, placing holds on items, assisting patrons with circulation-related records, registering patrons for library cards and programs, and collecting overdue fines and fees. The position may also require the assistant to work 18 hours per week, including one evening per week, alternate Saturdays, and occasional Sundays. The work environment is fast-paced, and the assistant will be expected to perform additional related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of college strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with the public in a fast-paced environment.
  • Library experience strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with integrated library systems.
