About the position

The Library Assistant II position at the Birmingham Public Library is a part-time role focused on public services within the Youth Department. The Library Assistant II will inspect returned materials for damage, verify due dates, and compute and receive overdue fines. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively with library staff and patrons alike. The work environment is dynamic, with responsibilities that may vary based on library needs. The Library Assistant II must be adaptable, as the position may require working during mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, including Sundays. The incumbent will also need to maintain confidentiality regarding patron records and ensure compliance with library regulations and procedures. Overall, this role is vital in supporting the library's mission to provide accessible and quality services to the community.

Responsibilities

  • Update library cards and applications, and address membership concerns according to board policies and procedures.
  • Provide information to patrons in person and by phone about overdue materials and other matters related to patron records.
  • Create promotional materials and assist in the development and ongoing tasks for library programs.
  • Inspect returned materials for damage, verify due dates, and compute and receive overdue fines.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Some college preferred.
  • One year of work experience dealing with the public.
  • Knowledge of library procedures and practices.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to establish effective relationships with patrons and associates.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and various software applications, online databases, and the Internet.
  • Ability to type at least 25 words per minute (wpm).
  • Ability to file and maintain records accurately.
  • Attention to detail and willingness to ask questions when unsure.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with patron records.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in data entry operations.
  • Knowledge of current trends in library service.
