About the position

The Library Assistant position at the Northwest Georgia Regional Library System involves performing routine clerical functions to support library operations, providing customer service, and assisting patrons with public computing use. The role requires flexibility in working hours, including days, evenings, and weekends, and is essential for maintaining library services and assisting a diverse patron population.

Responsibilities

  • Perform customer service functions at the circulation desks and public computing area.
  • Check library materials in/out and provide patrons with due date information.
  • Sort and shelve books, magazines, newspapers, and audiovisual materials in the appropriate order.
  • Assist library patrons in identifying and locating appropriate materials related to customer queries.
  • Monitor inventory levels of library supplies and initiate requests for new or replacement materials.
  • Answer the telephone and provide information and assistance to callers.
  • Help patrons with computer access and printing throughout the library.
  • Assist in promoting and publicizing programs for the library.
  • Maintain and report statistics related to programs and classes as required.
  • Attend webinars, workshops, and seminars to stay updated on library operations.
  • Follow and enforce library policies.
  • Open, close, and cover other departments according to shift assignments.
  • Routinely clean and organize workspaces and other areas as required.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office or equivalent programs, and the Windows operating system
  • Flexibility to work day, evening, and weekend hours
  • Ability to complete work quickly and accurately
  • Ability to work independently or with a team
  • Effective communication skills and excellent customer service skills
  • Physical ability to walk, bend, and manipulate computer components
  • Ability to push loaded book trucks up to 100 pounds and carry boxes and materials up to 35 pounds

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to speak languages in addition to English
  • Two years previous experience in library work, general clerical work, or customer service
  • Additional degrees in related fields
