About the position

The Library Manager-Community position at the Louisville Free Public Library is designed to oversee the operations and staff of a community library branch. This role involves developing an overall service plan, enhancing staff development, and coordinating library services and programming. The Library Manager will work independently under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. The position requires a proactive approach to managing library functions and ensuring that the branch meets the needs of the community it serves. In this role, the Library Manager will supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff, addressing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing performance appraisals. The manager will coordinate and review work assignments, establish work schedules, maintain standards, and monitor the status of ongoing projects. Additionally, the Library Manager will assist in budget preparation, monitor expenditures, and prepare statistical reports while conducting special projects as needed. The position also involves conducting research and assisting patrons with selecting and locating books and other materials. The Library Manager will serve on committees addressing specific library functions or issues, assist the public with library materials and equipment, and resolve complaints from the public. Promoting library programs and services within the community is a key responsibility, as is facilitating meetings of various sizes and program magnitudes. The manager will develop staff training programs, provide customer service, outreach, and technology assistance to the public, and make recommendations regarding policy and procedure development and implementation. Furthermore, the Library Manager will lead the development and maintenance of materials collections in specific areas of concentration, work with library leadership to set and monitor branch goals and strategies, and ensure that the building and grounds are properly maintained. The role also includes managing community library branch programs, events, services, and outreach efforts, while performing related work as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures.
  • Prepares and submits statistical reports and conducts special projects.
  • Conducts research and assists patrons with the selection and location of books and other materials.
  • Serves on committees dealing with specific library functions or issues.
  • Assists the public with the use of library materials and equipment.
  • Receives and attempts to resolve complaints from the public.
  • Promotes programs and services of the library in the community.
  • Facilitates meetings of various sizes and program magnitude.
  • Develops staff training programs.
  • Provides customer service, outreach and technology assistance to the public.
  • Makes recommendations regarding policy and procedure development and implementation.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science.
  • Three (3) years of library supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
