About The Position

The Library Technician at the University of Miami serves as the first point of contact for researchers and visitors at the Kislak Center. This role is essential for providing reference assistance, coordinating the retrieval and delivery of library materials, and ensuring the proper use and safety of collection materials. Additionally, the position involves promoting the collections through social media and assisting with departmental events and exhibitions.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, with at least 1 year in a library, archives, or academic setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Working knowledge of web-editing software and/or HTML/XML preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to think analytically and critically.
  • Aptitude for accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to work productively and cooperatively with colleagues and patrons.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds, push 40+ pounds, and reach while on a footstool.
  • Ability to work with potentially dusty or dirty materials.

Responsibilities

  • Provides reference assistance to in-person and distance researchers.
  • Informs patrons of registration and security procedures and ensures compliance with materials handling policies.
  • Assists researchers in using the Libraries' online catalog and other research resources.
  • Monitors and maintains security of all collection materials.
  • Handles item reproduction requests and coordinates with allied departments for delivery and payment.
  • Works closely with researchers to align collections with their research goals.
  • Identifies materials for rehousing and preservation stabilization.
  • Liaison to the Community Relations and Events Department for planning events.
  • Coordinates retrieval of materials from stacks and offsite storage.
  • Assists with filling out, tracking, and archiving forms for gifts, loans, and transactions.
  • Assists with cataloging books and journals in coordination with the Special Collections Librarian.
  • Gathers, interprets, and reports usage data on research services activities.
  • Assists in editing and updating Special Collections' webpages and online projects.
  • Maintains mailing lists in coordination with the Community Relations and Events Department.
  • Monitors and resolves departmental supplies needs.
  • Arranges tours in coordination with curators.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of exhibitions.
  • Provides informational overviews of exhibits to visitors.
  • Assists with social media outreach.
  • Conducts bibliographic research for potential acquisitions.
  • Processes invoices for purchased items.
