About the position

The Emergency Department Paramedic plays a crucial role in providing patient care in a hospital setting, working under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. This position involves performing a variety of tasks to assist in the treatment and care of patients, particularly in emergency situations, while collaborating closely with registered nurses and physicians.

Responsibilities

  • Cares for patients in the hospital setting under the direction of nursing and medical staff.
  • Answers signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs.
  • Bathes, dresses, and undresses patients.
  • Serves and collects food trays and feeds patients requiring help.
  • Transports patients or assists patients to walk.
  • Drapes patients for examinations and treatments, and remains with patients to assist during procedures.
  • Turns and repositions bedfast patients to prevent bedsores.
  • Changes bed linens, runs errands, directs visitors, and answers telephone calls.
  • Takes and records vital signs and food/fluid intake and output as directed.
  • Cleans, stores, prepares, and issues dressing packs and treatment trays.
  • Cleans patients' rooms and stocks linen and supplies each shift.
  • Assists physicians with procedures such as central line placement and suturing, upon competency validation.
  • Administers medications in the Emergency Room as ordered by the ER Physician, following established protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Education.
  • Completion of Paramedic training and certification.
  • Ongoing training competencies as defined by service line, facility, and department.
  • CPR certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • ACLS certification must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
  • PALS certification must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
  • Critical Care Certification (CCP-C, FP-C) is highly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience as a Patient Care Technician (PCT), Patient Care Assistant (PCA), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • Experience in Critical Care or Emergency Department settings.
