About the position

The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System Behavioral Medicine Service is looking to recruit (1) Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor to be assigned to the Women's Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP). The incumbent will provide psychotherapy for general mental health conditions in an outpatient setting. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Responsibilities

  • Develops an assessment of the Veteran in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members and significant others.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment and skills needed for substance abuse therapy, for all adult patients, including those with co-occurring disorders.
  • Understands the factors and causes of substance abuse, as well as the problems related to these disorders.
  • Must have knowledge to accurately diagnose the different types of substance abuse and dependence.
  • Utilizes assessment tools and assessment methods to best serve the Veteran.
  • Works with the Interdisciplinary treatment team to develop a treatment plan with the Veteran based on this assessment.
  • Factors in the bio-psycho-social needs of the Veteran.
  • Acts as the subject matter expert on VA and or Community resources.
  • Collaborates with other service providers in reassessing the Veteran's needs.
  • Educates the Veteran and/or caregiver of the available services and assists them in establishing the appropriate referrals based on the Veteran's preference or that of his/her surrogate decision-maker.
  • Acts as an advocate when it serves the best interest of the Veteran/family.
  • Educates and encourages the Veteran/family to advocate on their own behalf, fostering a sense of independence and empowerment.
  • Reviews progress notes from other providers to accurately determine the strengths and limitations of each Veteran being referred for SUD/Marriage/Family/Couples counseling services.
  • Provides ongoing supportive counseling to the Veteran and their caregiver.
  • Develops content for individual, marriage, family, couples and group therapy to obtain SUD goals and objectives.
  • Utilizes professionalism and ethical standards in the delivery of service without exception.
  • Focuses therapy on substance abuse disorders, dual diagnosis disorders, and the relationship between substance use and family/couples dynamics.
  • Works with Veteran/family/couple in identifying community-based self-help groups and other resources to continue substance abuse recovery, and to strengthen marriage/family/couples' relationships.
  • Makes referrals to grant & per diem social worker, homeless program coordinator social worker, and other services providers to ensure continued functioning.
  • Maintains records in keeping with VA and JCAHO standards.
  • Trains and educates other service providers on services offered by SUD LMHPC.
  • Maintains a basic awareness of eligibility requirements for services and interfaces with VA and community services.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with employees, volunteers, consumers and stakeholders within the VA outside community agencies.
  • Completes all administrative or treatment projects assigned by the behavioral medicine chief and/or SUD supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must hold a master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from a CACREP accredited program.
  • Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination/evaluation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel.
