About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (OMHT) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is focused on providing mental health counseling services to veterans and their families. The role involves assessing psychosocial functioning, formulating treatment plans, and implementing therapeutic modalities under supervision. The counselor will work with individuals facing emotional, medical, and social challenges, utilizing individual, group, and family counseling skills. This position requires advanced knowledge of mental health theories and modalities, as well as the ability to provide specialized treatment services to complex cases.

Responsibilities

  • Work with patients and families experiencing emotional, medical, and social problems using individual, group, and family counseling skills.
  • Assess psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members, formulating and implementing treatment plans.
  • Utilize supportive, problem-solving, or crisis intervention techniques to achieve treatment goals.
  • Provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on psychosocial treatment of patients.
  • Teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice, providing supervision for licensure or specialty certifications.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Hold a master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Several years of post-licensure experience in mental health counseling.
  • Trained in evidence-based psychotherapies.
