About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (MH&BSS) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is focused on providing comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions to veterans, particularly within the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Program. The role involves individual, group, couples, and family psychotherapy aimed at improving the functioning of individuals and families. The counselor will also provide education to patients and their families, consult with professional staff, and develop treatment plans for an assigned caseload of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive, evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions including individual, group, couples, and family psychotherapy.
  • Educates patients, family members, and significant others about mental health issues and treatment options.
  • Consults with professional staff regarding clinical findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients.
  • Develops, implements, and documents psychotherapeutic treatment plans for an assigned caseload of patients.
  • Assumes complete professional responsibility for clinical findings, patient care decisions, and documentation.
  • Develops patient education materials/modules and assists with Veteran Peer and Family activities.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Hold a master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from a CACREP accredited program.
  • Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • Ability to engage in intake and assessment, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning, and implementation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in providing clinical supervision over the clinical practice of unlicensed LPMHCs or LPMHC trainees.
  • Knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders for treatment goal formulation.
