About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (Program Coordinator) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs South Texas Veterans Healthcare System involves specialized knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of various mental health disorders. The role focuses on suicide prevention, working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, and providing direct patient care, training, and consultation to staff and community organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a list of patients determined to be currently high-risk for suicide and monitor their care.
  • Consult and collaborate with providers regarding the delivery of care to high-risk veterans.
  • Provide education and facilitate best practices in suicide prevention.
  • Respond timely to referrals from the Veteran Crisis Line and engage veterans in treatment.
  • Complete Comprehensive Suicide Risk Evaluations and consult for consideration of activation of high-risk flags.
  • Act as a liaison and trainer to community organizations and veterans organizations.
  • Track no-show appointments and follow up with patients to reschedule.
  • Compile data and complete required reports to meet performance measures.
  • Provide a full range of psychological interventions with an emphasis on evidence-based practices.
  • Serve as a resource for other professionals concerning psychological services.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • At least one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working with a complex range of psychosocial issues.
  • Strong communication skills in writing and orally.
  • Organizational skills and in-depth knowledge of VA policies and procedures.
