About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (Program Coordinator) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs focuses on implementing suicide prevention programs at a local level. The role involves education, outreach, monitoring, and coordination of activities related to suicide prevention, serving as a subject matter expert and point of contact for suicide-related matters.

Responsibilities

  • Track and report on Veterans who have attempted suicide or are at high risk for suicide.
  • Respond to referrals from the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) and self-referrals from other sources.
  • Ensure all VA staff members receive discipline-appropriate suicide prevention training.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to increase awareness of suicide prevention best practices and provide training to individuals who have contact with Veterans.
  • Provide subject matter consultation to providers on resources for suicidal individuals and system design to prevent deaths by suicide.
  • Work with providers to intensify monitoring and treatment for high-risk patients and educate them on risk reduction approaches.
  • Report to OMHSP on Veterans who attempted or died by suicide and send requested data for analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with prescribed practices related to High Risk for Suicide Patient Record Flags (HRF-PRF).
  • Implement facility suicide prevention strategies in accordance with VHA policies and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Utilize online tools and resources to enhance care for Veterans and raise community awareness.
  • Assist with clinical outreach contacts related to VCL consults and other necessary follow-ups.
  • Document services rendered to support accurate tracking of workload and productivity.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Hold a master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • At least one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in a major specialty treatment program area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and practice guidelines for the program.
