About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor serves as a key member of a multidisciplinary team at a community-based Vet Center, providing essential counseling and therapeutic services to Veterans, service members, and their families. The role focuses on facilitating successful transitions from military to civilian life through outreach, direct services, and referrals to community resources. The counselor is responsible for conducting assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, and coordinating care to address a variety of psychological and psychosocial issues related to military experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling services to eligible individuals experiencing military-related psychological and psychosocial problems.
  • Independently implement psychotherapeutic modalities for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Conduct readjustment counseling intake procedures, including risk assessments and documentation of symptoms.
  • Formulate and update individualized counseling service plans with measurable objectives and treatment goals.
  • Provide case management and care coordination, making diagnostic inferences within clinical scope.
  • Conduct timely assessments of Veterans in crisis and initiate safety planning as needed.
  • Utilize community resources for referrals to maximize individuals' independence and well-being.
  • Establish and maintain community care relationships to coordinate access to counseling services.
  • Engage in outreach activities to promote Vet Center access and understanding of social work interventions.
  • Document all clinical interactions and care coordination as required.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • At least one year of post-Master's Degree experience in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to coordinate services.
  • Skill in conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions.
  • Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses and treatment procedures.
  • Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers and staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with military populations and their unique challenges.
  • Familiarity with VA and community resources for Veterans.
  • Skills in crisis intervention and safety planning.
