About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves providing essential readjustment counseling services to eligible Veterans, active duty service members, and their families. The role is centered around addressing military-related psychological and psychosocial issues through direct counseling, community outreach, and coordination with various resources. The counselor will engage in intake assessments, develop individualized service plans, and provide crisis intervention as needed, all while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake screening and assessment for eligible individuals, including risk assessments and documentation of identified behaviors or symptoms.
  • Develop and update individualized readjustment counseling service plans that reflect therapeutic and psychosocial interventions.
  • Provide direct readjustment counseling services, incorporating complex psychosocial assessments and making diagnostic inferences within clinical scope.
  • Conduct timely risk assessments and crisis interventions for Veterans in distress, initiating safety planning as appropriate.
  • Coordinate care by linking Veterans with community services and resources to enhance their independence and well-being.
  • Maintain active coordination with outreach workers to ensure seamless referrals to Vet Center services for individuals engaged in community outreach events.
  • Participate in staff meetings to promote team cohesion and staff development.
  • Document all clinical interactions and care coordination efforts as required by policy.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this position.
  • A Master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from an accredited program is required.
  • A full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor is required for GS-11 level; GS-9 level candidates may be unlicensed but must be working towards licensure.
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing psychotherapeutic modalities with individuals, families, and groups.
  • Ability to engage in intake and assessment, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with military populations or in a veteran-focused environment.
  • Familiarity with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders.
  • Multicultural counseling skills and sensitivity to diversity.
