About the position

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) position at Spring ISD in Houston, Texas, involves providing essential health care services to students in a school setting. The LVN will work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and the campus principal, ensuring compliance with health standards and regulations while maintaining accurate health records and providing first aid care. The role emphasizes communication with students, parents, and staff, as well as adherence to confidentiality guidelines and district policies.

Responsibilities

  • Accept supervision and directions from RN nurse program leader/supervising RN and campus principal.
  • Comply with standards of care as outlined by the Board of Nursing for licensure.
  • Comply with federal guidelines regarding confidentiality of individual student/family issues and concerns (HIPPA, FERPA).
  • Apply universal precautions in all health-related activities.
  • Demonstrate a positive and helpful approach in dealing with students, parents, and staff.
  • Maintain accurate written and computerized records as required.
  • Operate health-related equipment such as blood pressure monitors, otoscope, audiometer, thermometer, and vision and hearing screening equipment.
  • Provide daily care of students with medical needs utilizing health protocols and care plans established by the RN nurse program leader/supervising RN.
  • Provide basic first aid care for minor injuries and illnesses and obtain necessary assistance in cases of serious trauma and/or illness.
  • Accurately administer medications as ordered by a physician according to state law and District policy, and recognize adverse reactions.
  • Maintain accurate, current, complete health records on each student, including daily documentation of student care, medications administered, treatments administered, immunization records, health history, screening results, and follow-up information.
  • Assist the parent and RN nurse program leader/supervising RN in the development of Individual Healthcare Plans (IHP).
  • Perform screening procedures as required by Texas law and District policy.
  • Identify health problems and refer students for further evaluation as necessary, following up on referrals to obtain optimum health for each student.
  • Communicate daily with essential staff and RN nurse program leader/supervising RN about possible communicable diseases, changes in students' health status, and family needs or concerns.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding reporting abuse to the appropriate agency according to state laws and District policy.
  • Report communicable diseases as required by Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services according to District policy.
  • Educate faculty/staff on health-related topics as directed by the RN nurse program leader/supervising RN.
  • Provide guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel or other school staff on health-related issues as directed by the RN nurse program leader/supervising RN.
  • Adhere to Texas Department of State Health Services immunization laws, secure records on each student, and update as necessary on health card and computerized record.
  • Comply with District requirements for Medicaid billing (SHARS).
  • Participate in ARDS and IEP meetings as appropriate in consultation with RN nurse program leader or supervising RN.

Requirements

  • Valid Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license in Texas.
  • Knowledge of health care standards and practices as outlined by the Board of Nursing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Proficient in using health-related equipment and technology.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in a school setting or with children.
