About the position

The Senior Enforcement Officer/Inspector position within the EPA's Region 2 focuses on ensuring compliance with environmental regulations through inspections and investigations of regulated facilities. This role requires technical expertise in environmental laws and practices, as well as the ability to provide regulatory assistance and conduct field sampling and audits. The position is office-centered, requiring regular physical attendance at designated duty stations, with some flexibility for remote work after meeting eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections and investigations of regulated facilities for compliance with applicable regulations, permits, or other federal requirements.
  • Provide technical advice and information on significant analytical methods and sampling techniques related to specific program areas.
  • Serve as a technical expert in the development, negotiation, and litigation of civil and criminal enforcement matters.
  • Plan, conduct, and provide regulatory technical assistance on complex field sampling and analytical services, facility inspections, and audits.
  • Assist customers on the technical aspects of EPA laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines; or a combination of education and experience with relevant coursework.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level, including conducting site inspections under national environmental law and writing inspection reports identifying violations.
  • Knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, policies, and practices related to enforcement and compliance activities.
  • Skill in conducting field inspections, gathering evidence, and initiating enforcement actions.
  • Ability to plan and conduct technical assistance for complex field sampling for inspections or audits.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
