About the position

The Senior Analytical Scientist position within the Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division at the EPA involves analyzing environmental samples to determine contaminants and chemical parameters. The role requires developing and validating methods, adhering to laboratory quality control systems, and providing technical expertise based on sample analysis. This position is office-centered, requiring regular physical attendance at the duty station in Edison, NJ, with some telework eligibility after meeting certain requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze routine and non-routine environmental samples for the determination of contaminants and chemical parameters.
  • Develop, modify, and validate methods for sample analysis.
  • Implement and adhere to laboratory quality control system requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise, assistance, and advice based on the analysis of environmental samples.
  • Interpret and evaluate data to determine its significance and communicate findings orally and in written reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
  • 1 year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level, including assisting with the analysis of environmental samples and participating in laboratory quality control development.
  • Skill in the preparation of environmental samples for the determination of microbiological contaminants.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and/or tribal environmental regulations, policies, and requirements associated with inspection, enforcement, and compliance.
  • Skill in analyzing environmental samples for the determination of bacteria and human-associated gene sequences using qPCR.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with traditional membrane filtration and multiple tube fermentation techniques.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
