About the position

The Life Skills Instructor (LSI) at Villa of Hope plays a crucial role in providing care and supervision for clients within the Residential Addiction Treatment Program. This position focuses on helping youth develop essential life skills, ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment, and supporting the treatment plans tailored for each client. The LSI is responsible for program documentation, maintaining the security of the LIFE House, and fostering positive relationships with clients while adhering to agency policies and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group supervision to clients in care and account for all clients at all times.
  • Maintain youth to staff ratio and remain on shift until relief staff arrive.
  • Direct and participate in the cleanliness and upkeep of the residence, reporting needed repairs to the Program Manager.
  • Supervise medication and record documentation, reporting medical problems and following medical directives.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment while adhering to safety standards and regulations.
  • Employ approved crisis intervention/prevention techniques as per agency policy.
  • Lead and participate in recreation and leisure time activities.
  • Conduct premises searches to ensure safety and security of staff and residents.
  • Transport clients to off-campus activities such as home visits and appointments.
  • Assist clients with bedtime and morning routines.
  • Fulfill legal requirements as a Mandated Reporter under NYS law.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security for all client and staff related materials.
  • Work closely with the treatment team to construct and maintain treatment and crisis support plans.
  • Build positive caring relationships with youth based on respect and effective communication.
  • Assist youth with learning basic skills in daily living such as meal preparation and household responsibilities.
  • Document interactions of LIFE youth daily to ensure effective communication to the treatment team.
  • Participate in treatment process by attending team meetings and facilitating groups.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree in Human Services preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents within a human services field strongly preferred.
  • First Aid, CPR & AED Certification preferred (Agency will provide).
  • Valid NYS driver's license in good standing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to think critically and make decisions during crisis situations.
  • Necessary stamina and temperament to work with youth (ages 12 - 21) who have significant substance abuse histories.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
