About the position

The Life Underwriter position at Farm Bureau is designed for an effective team member within the Life Underwriting Department. The primary objective of this role is to provide comprehensive underwriting services to both the department and the Field Force, utilizing company-approved solution methods and adhering to established underwriting guidelines. The Life Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating life insurance applications, ensuring that all underwriting processes align with company standards, industry regulations, and statutory requirements. This role requires a strong understanding of medical knowledge to accurately assess risks associated with life insurance applications. In this position, the Life Underwriter will utilize company underwriting guidelines, industry standards, and medical knowledge to underwrite and process life insurance applications effectively. The underwriter will determine facultative reinsurance liabilities based on established rules and maintain approval authority for amounts up to $2,000,000. Communication is a key aspect of this role, as the underwriter will correspond via email, telephone, and various systems with clients, agents, doctors, paramedical facilities, reinsurers, service laboratories, commercial inspection companies, and other organizations. This communication is essential for gathering the necessary information to underwrite risks accurately. Additionally, the Life Underwriter will be responsible for explaining underwriting decisions to agents, ensuring discretion when discussing privileged and confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Use company underwriting guidelines, industry guidelines, statutory requirements, and medical knowledge to underwrite and process life insurance applications.
  • Determine facultative reinsurance liabilities based on established rules.
  • Maintain approval authority up to $2,000,000.
  • Correspond by e-mail, telephone, and systems with clients, agents, doctors, paramedical facilities, reinsurers, service laboratories, commercial inspection companies, and other organizations to gather information necessary to properly underwrite risks.
  • Explain underwriting decisions to agents, using discretion when discussing privileged and confidential information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with focus on insurance, business, finance, or medical field required, or equivalent underwriting experience may be considered.
  • Experienced computer usage and proven skills in Microsoft Office including Excel or similar spreadsheet software required.
  • Medical terminology knowledge required.
  • Willingness to pursue continuing job-related training and education required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum five years associate underwriter experience or four years of experience as a life underwriter in another company preferred.
  • Financial underwriting or other life insurance processing experience preferred.
  • ALU Level II (AALU) or ALMI designation required.
  • FALU, FLMI, CLU, ChFC, or LLIF designation preferred.
