About the position

The Life Underwriting Research Consultant role at MassMutual involves supporting the Office of the Corporate Chief Underwriter (OCCU) through various research initiatives and projects. This position is designed for an experienced professional who will engage in impactful work, including improving underwriting processes, analyzing data sources, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance risk selection methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Support protective value (PV) studies and create RFPs for different vendors.
  • Examine and identify new data sources for research and insights.
  • Improve workflows and work on increasing automation in underwriting processes.
  • Provide input on predictive modeling and revise underwriting rules and procedures.
  • Partner with leadership to champion changes that improve processes while maintaining mortality expectations.
  • Shape data sources for data-driven underwriting practices.
  • Provide recommendations around new technologies and methodologies for risk selection.
  • Analyze, create, and develop rules for algorithmic and accelerated underwriting processes.
  • Develop new and competitive underwriting guidelines with research, documentation, marketing, and presentations.

Requirements

  • HS diploma or GED
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience in Life Insurance Underwriting
  • Minimum $5+ million life approval limit without second signature
  • Mastery level knowledge of individual life insurance practices, underwriting standards, and operations
  • Confident communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically and influence others
  • Demonstrated track record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau)

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Industry designations/education (FALU, FLMI, CLU) preferred
  • 10+ years of experience
  • Entrepreneur mindset with the ability to drive business forward independently
