About the position

The Lifeguard position at the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City is responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of all participants in and around the swimming pool. This role requires vigilance, physical fitness, and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations. Lifeguards must maintain certifications and training, enforce safety procedures, and provide emergency care when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for the welfare and safety of all participants in and around the swimming pool.
  • Stay current in CPR, PR/AED/O2, and First Aid, renewing certifications annually.
  • Remain mentally alert to dangerous situations to ensure swimmer safety.
  • Perform rescues and emergency care for accident victims in and around the pool.
  • Encourage safe practices and prevent accidents by adhering to established safety procedures.
  • Attend monthly in-service training and required certification events.
  • Maintain skills necessary for preventive lifeguarding and water rescues.
  • Lock and secure all pool doors when closed and follow daily pool maintenance duties.
  • Project authority while maintaining a positive image and genuine concern for pool users.
  • Notify the supervisor of any broken or unsafe equipment and take it out of service until repairs are made.

Requirements

  • Must be certified in PR/CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a cooperative spirit and promote character development values.
  • Ability to relate positively with pool patrons.
  • Professional, alert, courteous, and tactful demeanor.
  • Strong water skills and top physical fitness.
