The Lifeguard position at the YMCA of Greater Houston is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool and surrounding areas. Lifeguards must respond to emergencies, enforce safety rules, perform pool maintenance, and maintain required certifications while fostering effective relationships with members and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool and surrounding areas.
  • Respond to emergency situations immediately and appropriately.
  • Enforce safety rules and swim testing procedures.
  • Perform maintenance of the pool and pool area to ensure cleanliness and safety.
  • Conduct pool chemical testing and maintain accurate records.
  • Perform daily equipment checks and ensure availability of necessary equipment.
  • Monitor pool hazards and prevent accidents.
  • Maintain all required certifications and attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain vigilant surveillance of the pool and perform rescues as needed.
  • Communicate rules and policies effectively to members and participants.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard Certification or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, or obtain YMCA Lifeguard Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Current certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Mathematical skills to perform basic calculations.
