About the position

The Lifeguard position at Greater Somerset County YMCA is a part-time role focused on maintaining safe swimming conditions and promoting member safety and engagement. The role supports the YMCA's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Lifeguards are responsible for active surveillance of the pool area, responding to emergencies, and ensuring compliance with safety rules and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Addresses member concerns and directs members to program areas or lane needs.
• Supports the overall Aquatic team.
• Assists with swim lessons and deck supervision as needed.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately.
• Completes related reports as required.
• Applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area consistently.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or state Health Department code.
• Walks the perimeter of the pool scanning the bottom before taking over the lifeguard stand.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes appropriate action.
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
• Dresses in uniform as required.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 18.
• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
• Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguard certification or equivalent.
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
• Demonstrates lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
