The Light Microscope (LM) Field Service Engineer position is an entry- to mid-level role that requires a strong foundation in electronics and mechanics. This position is crucial for providing technical service and support to our customers. A significant portion of the role involves participating in technical training courses, both domestically and internationally, to ensure that the engineer is well-equipped to handle the complexities of the equipment. The role demands a commitment to learning and the ability to absorb training material quickly, as well as a basic understanding of application principles. In this customer-facing role, the Field Service Engineer will work closely with higher-level engineers and engage in on-the-job training. Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication are essential for success in this position. The engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing microscopy equipment, maintaining systems to meet uptime performance, and cultivating positive relationships with customers. The role also involves travel to customer sites, often on short notice, to resolve issues or support other field service personnel. As the engineer gains experience, they will be assigned more complex tasks and service orders to complete independently.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot Widefield and Confocal Microscopy equipment.
  • Make technically complicated equipment repairs.
  • Maintain systems to achieve the contractually obligated equipment uptime performance.
  • Report all tool actions/events and daily activities in field service reports.
  • Communicate tool and site issues to customers and 2nd level support; follow up to achieve resolution of customer's open issues.
  • Schedule and perform all tool Preventative Maintenance activities.
  • Cultivate and develop positive working relationships with customers, system users and company personnel.
  • Travel, often on short notice, to customer sites to resolve problems or support other field service personnel.
  • Complete and submit field service reports.
  • Partner with colleagues to acquire technical guidance needed to problem-solve systems solutions.

Requirements

  • 4-year degree or technical certificate in technical/scientific discipline, related military electronics experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience such as 3+ years direct experience building, maintaining, installing, and/or repairing similarly complex automated electromechanical systems.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Laboratory Safety requirements for BSL 1, 2, and 3 environments, as well as specimen handling of Level 3 (and below) pathogenic biohazards.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot problems in software, electronics, optics, laser optics, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of Windows operating environments and word processing and or email applications. Familiarity with databases or CRM Systems a plus.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical or mechanical engineering documentation and schematics.
  • Proven ability to work successfully as an individual contributor or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, able to converse readily in English, both verbally and in writing (German a plus).
  • Good administrative and time management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience installing and troubleshooting industrial electronics, machines, or computer systems.
  • Previous CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) installation and troubleshooting experience is preferred however not required.
