About the position

As a Linux Engineer - System Administrator at Comcast, you will be an integral part of our Technology, Product, Experience (TPX) organization, which operates at the intersection of media and technology. This role is pivotal in managing and maintaining our Linux infrastructure, primarily based on Rocky Linux 8+. Your responsibilities will include ensuring the optimal performance, security, and reliability of our servers while upholding Comcast's cybersecurity standards. You will be expected to apply your engineering skills and methodology to contribute to various cross-functional project teams, working with moderate guidance in your area of expertise. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to implement innovative solutions that align with the company's technical vision. In this role, you will maintain and update the video delivery Server (VDE) build process documentation, ensuring that operations can consistently build and deploy VDEs in the field. You will provide ongoing support for VDEs, addressing any technical issues that arise and ensuring optimal performance. Your tasks will also include installing, configuring, and maintaining Linux systems, managing user accounts and permissions, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues. Additionally, you will be responsible for automating routine tasks using scripting languages and tools, implementing security measures to protect against unauthorized access, and documenting system configurations and procedures. Collaboration with other IT professionals will be essential to ensure seamless system integration and support.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update the video delivery Server (VDE) build process documentation.
  • Provide ongoing support for VDEs in the field, ensuring optimal performance and addressing any technical issues.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux systems (Rocky 8+ or Redhat).
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot any issues.
  • Install, configure, and maintain essential system services like web servers, databases (Postgres), and applications.
  • Automate routine tasks using scripting languages and tools.
  • Implement and maintain system security measures to protect against unauthorized access and vulnerabilities, ensuring compliance with Comcast cybersecurity standards.
  • Stay up to date with the latest security updates and patch management procedures.
  • Document system configurations and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other IT professionals to ensure seamless system integration and support.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience as a Linux System Administrator or similar role.
  • Proven experience managing and maintaining Linux systems.
  • Strong understanding of system administration principles and best practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of network protocols and architectures (TCP/IP, DNS, etc.).
  • Experience with network security principles and best practices (firewalls, VPNs, etc.).
  • Expertise in network troubleshooting and performance optimization.
  • Proficient in working with the command line.
  • Strong understanding of Linux security concepts and best practices.
  • Understanding of network monitoring tools and techniques.
  • Excellent knowledge of shell scripting and familiarity with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Python, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
