About the position

The Linux Systems Administrator position at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) involves collaborating with the Technology Solutions ACER team to build, manage, and support server infrastructure, including secure computing environments and databases. This role is essential for providing reliable systems and services to faculty and researchers, under the supervision of the Associate Director of Advanced Platforms for Research. The position also encourages exploration of emerging technologies, offering staff the opportunity to specialize in areas that align with their career goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provides tier 2 technical support via ticketing systems; troubleshoots nontrivial system issues; establishes a trusted relationship with faculty and researchers; attends meetings with the customers as needed.
  • Installs operating systems, libraries, security patches and updates; installs complex research software; provisions virtual machines and user access; configures file systems, local/network storage, firewalls/security policies.
  • Builds new servers in the datacenter; rebuilds/reconfigures existing infrastructure including but not limited to server nodes, storage, networking.
  • Participates in internal team meetings; contributes to setting and meeting the team's goals/targets by leveraging task management tools such as JIRA.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
  • Minimum 1 year of professional IT experience within System Administration & Operations which includes demonstrated experience in configuration, installation, maintenance, backup/recovery and upgrading multi-user computer systems hardware and software as well as establishing/managing user accounts.
  • Demonstrated IT experience with Windows Server and Linux system administration and operations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated experience with using command line interfaces (e.g. Bash, PowerShell)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Bash, Python, and other scripting languages
  • Experience with HPC job schedulers Moab, Slurm
  • Experience with containerized workloads with Docker, Singularity/Apptainer, Kubernetes
  • Knowledge of cloud computing in AWS and Azure
  • Experience with configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef
  • Familiarity with YAML, firewalls, routing and VLANs, proxies, Apache and Nginx-based web services
  • Knowledge of parallel filesystems such as Lustre, GPFS, NFS, CIFS
  • Experience with Shibboleth, LDAP and Active Directory authentication
  • Knowledge of encryption and security policies
  • Experience handling HIPAA/FERPA sensitive data
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with various faculty and members of a comprehensive team
  • Ability to be a team player and lead by example
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with new research labs and student community.
