About the position

The Linux System Administrator position at Los Alamos National Laboratory involves supporting the Programmatic Services Group within the Infrastructure Service Division. The role focuses on providing system administration for Linux/UNIX servers and desktop systems, ensuring the smooth operation of computing environments across the Laboratory. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of tasks including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and customer support, while also automating processes and managing virtual environments.

Responsibilities

  • Support Linux/UNIX servers and desktop systems.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, workstations, and network issues in a heterogeneous environment.
  • Implement and manage Linux solutions to support customer workstation requirements.
  • Support server/client virtual environments.
  • Resolve customer support issues and fulfill requests through remote and onsite support.
  • Automate tasks using programming and scripting.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network issues including file shares and authentication.
  • Communicate technical information to both technical and nontechnical personnel.

Requirements

  • Experience working with RHEL/Linux operating systems.
  • Experience scripting automated tasks.
  • Knowledge of enterprise configuration management tools.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills with workstations and servers.
  • Experience using a formal ticket management system.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with NIST guidelines and standards.
  • Proficiency with Ansible for configuration management.
  • Knowledge of various Linux distributions.
  • Experience working in Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI).
