About the position

The Linux System Administrator III role at Paycom is crucial for maintaining the server environment by identifying system requirements, provisioning new systems, installing upgrades, and managing software maintenance and licensing. The Linux Systems & Tools team is responsible for all Paycom application servers across all datacenters. As a Linux System Administrator, you will collaborate with the team in the architecture, configuration, and maintenance of all Linux Systems projects, tools, and processes. This includes participating in troubleshooting, remediation, and documentation efforts to ensure the smooth operation of the server environment. In this position, you will assist in the architecture design and determining system requirements for all new server requests. You will configure Linux operating systems on both virtual machines and physical servers, and work on support tickets assigned to the Linux Systems & Tools team. Regularly reviewing system performance and logs will be part of your responsibilities, providing reports for management's awareness of the technical health of Paycom's infrastructure. You will also engage in capacity planning and forecasting, develop team documentation for day-to-day duties, and ensure that systems are properly configured, updated, healthy, hardened, and scaled to meet business needs. Collaboration with various technology teams will be essential as you evaluate disaster recovery plans, backup requirements, and failover procedures. You will communicate with vendors to ensure proper licensing and timely renewals, and act as a subject matter expert on any assigned systems, contributing to the overall success of the Linux Systems & Tools team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the architecture design and determining system requirements for all new server requests

  • Keep systems properly configured, updated, healthy, hardened and scaled to meet the needs of the business
  • Work with various technology teams to pro-actively evaluate DR plans, backup requirements, and failover procedures
  • Communicate with vendors to ensure we are properly licensed and up to date on renewals
  • Be responsible for and act as subject matter expert on any assigned systems

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3+ years of professional IT experience
  • 3+ years supporting Linux servers editions
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux Server operating system editions
  • In depth knowledge and experience of web application architecture and technologies
  • Bash or similar command line tools used to manage and automate
  • Using a log aggregation tool, such as Splunk, for troubleshooting and reporting
  • Linux and Windows server administration - applying patches, ensuring health, right-sizing, ensuring quality DR architecture, and troubleshooting problems
  • Data retention and capacity planning

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in MIS, Info Sys, Computer Science or related fields
  • RHCA/Linux+
  • System administration experience in med-large private datacenter environments
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining highly available system architecture
  • High availability and disaster recovery planning and design
  • System performance reviewing experience of existing architecture for any changes to the system and that require updates
  • Expert knowledge Linux Server operating systems and built in tools
  • Knowledge of Windows Server operating systems and built in tools
  • Knowledge of VMware and virtual environments
