About the position

Maxar is currently seeking a Mid-Level Linux System Administrator to join our team at our facility located in Herndon, Virginia. In this role, you will closely support our mission partners, and your work will have a direct impact on mission imperatives. As part of our infrastructure team, you will collaborate with our software development, DevOps, and cybersecurity teams, leveraging open-source tools to create and maintain a private cloud and big data platform. Our customers present unique and challenging problems, and we are continuously expanding our system footprint to meet their needs. We are a multi-faceted software development and systems administration team dedicated to building and maintaining software applications backed by a self-managed cloud infrastructure with a significant big-data footprint, exceeding 10 petabytes. Our diverse background in mission support and full-stack system development enables us to tackle unique and challenging intelligence problems in support of special operations analysts and their ongoing activities. Prototyping and frequent, iterative feedback are core to our delivery approach, anchored by the need to work quickly in support of our missions. As a member of the infrastructure team, your daily responsibilities will include monitoring and addressing hardware and software outages on the platform, engaging with tenants and users of the OpenStack Cloud Platform to assist with troubleshooting and requests, implementing cybersecurity remediations in close cooperation with the cybersecurity team, upgrading and deploying applications on the platform, integrating new hardware into various compute clusters, and reviewing and updating existing procedures and documentation. Responsibilities

  • Monitor and act on any hardware and software outages on the platform.
  • Engage with tenants and users of the OpenStack Cloud Platform via chat services to assist them with troubleshooting and requests.
  • Implement cybersecurity remediations in close cooperation with the cybersecurity team.
  • Upgrade and deploy applications on the platform.
  • Integrate new hardware into multiple different compute clusters.
  • Review and update existing procedures and documentation.

Requirements

  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Current TS/SCI clearance and willingness and ability to obtain a CI polygraph.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field (4 additional years of experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree; a master's degree may count as an additional 2 years of experience).
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience with administration of Linux-based environments.
  • Working knowledge of automation tools: Ansible, Bash.
  • Understanding of Python, Docker, and Packer concepts.
  • Skilled in Tier 2 and 3 level support and troubleshooting complex environments.
  • Ability to support a wide range of tasks (upgrade software, patching, monitoring systems, R&D).
  • Willingness to work full-time on-site in Herndon, VA.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of security-related tools: Security Center, Carbon Black, McAfee, SELinux.
  • Working knowledge of Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) application to Linux operating systems.
  • Full-stack development experience in Python.
  • Hands-on experience with OpenStack administration/deployment/upgrades.
  • Hands-on experience with Ceph administration/deployment/upgrades.
  • Kubernetes orchestration experience.
  • Experience with data-driven tools like Hadoop, HDFS, Elasticsearch, YARN.
  • Experience with provision and configuration management tools such as Ansible or Terraform.
  • Experience with Docker, GitLab, AWS.
  • Experience with the cybersecurity accreditation process (RMF, ATO process, NIST 800-53 cybersecurity controls).
  • Experience with CI/CD tools like SonarQube, Fortify, or similar.
  • Experience with cybersecurity tools like SecurityOnion, PCAP, Snort, Bro, or similar.
  • Any experience working with GPUs and/or virtualizing their resources.
  • Strong verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adjust quickly to ad-hoc requests.
  • Ability to collaborate in a mixed environment of team and solo work.
