About the position

The Linux System Administrator at Brookhaven National Laboratory will provide Level 2 technical support for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). This role involves system maintenance, new service implementation, and process improvement, focusing on Linux system administration and various key technologies such as Ansible, Red Hat Satellite Server, and VMware. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Application Hosting and Cloud Services team to support NSLS-II operations and contribute to lab-wide initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and provision Linux workstation endpoints, including network and authentication.
  • Responsible for configuration tasks including troubleshooting and resolving workstation issues in collaboration with NSLS-II support teams.
  • Provide dedicated technical support across various communication platforms (such as chat, telephone, remote control), and in-person for the NSLS-II facility.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer to enhance the IT proficiency of NSLS-II research staff.
  • Ensure asset compliance.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience/certifications.
  • Minimum one (1) year work experience supporting, operating, and troubleshooting Linux workstations.
  • Proficient in writing clear and concise documentation.
  • Skilled in imparting technical knowledge to peers.
  • Experience in customer service.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or 9 (or equivalent derivative) workstations, with strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficient with provisioning server resources using VMware vSphere virtualization platform and related tools.
  • Proficiency with Red Hat Satellite Server 6.x
  • Experience in task automation using configuration management tools like Puppet or Ansible.
  • Experience using GitLab/GitHub Enterprise.
  • Skilled in scripting for automation and integration tasks.
  • Knowledge of Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, Ansible Tower, or AWX for automation management.
  • Experience with container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, or OpenShift.
