About the position

The Linux Systems Administrator IV at Cornell University is responsible for managing and administering systems infrastructure, core server applications, and networking and security within a complex technical environment. This role supports research and instructional needs across the Engineering/Bowers CIS/Tech Campus and CIT hosted infrastructure, focusing on Linux and Windows servers, virtualization platforms, and advanced computing systems. The position requires a strong background in Linux server administration, cloud services, and virtualization, along with the ability to mentor team members and lead architectural design discussions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and manage production clusters and servers in support of research and instructional needs.
  • Lead architect function for designing and validating efforts related to testing, evaluating, and implementing solutions using emerging technologies.
  • Integrate advanced compute systems into the existing heterogeneous computing environment.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance supported infrastructure across multiple locations and units.
  • Implement infrastructure solutions in accordance with University Policy 5.10, Information Security.
  • Develop and implement procedures for system administration to ensure stability and reliability of system infrastructure.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to other team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a computer related technical field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ten (10) years of experience managing Linux servers and clusters in a complex technical environment.
  • Advanced in-depth working knowledge of Linux server administration, including installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, backup, recovery, and client support.
  • Strong in-depth knowledge of cloud services and various virtualization platforms.
  • Proficiency in scripting and design solutions for new platforms.
  • Advanced software packaging and deployment knowledge.
  • Excellent understanding of computer hardware, TCP/IP networking, and network security issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience supporting research computing in higher education or research environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux utilities and services.
  • Experience working in an advanced virtualized environment (VMware).
  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
  • Advanced knowledge of shell scripting languages and automation.
  • Experience with managing network switches.
  • Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Ganglia).
