About the position

The Linux Systems Administrator at UC Irvine is responsible for managing and supporting Linux server instances both on-premises and in the cloud. This role involves applying professional concepts and industry best practices to resolve systems problems, maintaining documentation, and evaluating technologies. The position requires collaboration with the Enterprise Unix Services team to ensure the operational management of critical campus services that utilize the Linux operating system.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily operational management of on-premises and Cloud Linux server instances.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of procedures and system configurations.
  • Select methods and techniques to obtain solutions for systems problems.
  • Evaluate technologies and complete additional work assigned by the Assistant Manager, Enterprise Unix Services.
  • Administer various distributions and open-source applications of the Linux operating system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 1-3 years of experience with Linux system administration in an environment with 100+ servers/compute instances.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information clearly.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Basic knowledge of applying technologies and systems to meet business needs.
  • Ability to write technical documentation clearly and concisely.
  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and corrective actions.
  • Knowledge of computer security best practices and policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ITIL or similar IT best practices frameworks.
  • Experience installing, configuring, optimizing, and maintaining Linux-based web server applications like Apache and Nginx.
  • Experience with network technologies, especially DNS, VLANs, and firewalls.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and configuration management tools like Ansible.
  • Experience with programming administration tasks using shell scripts and languages like Python.
