About the position

The Linux Systems Administrator will be responsible for the design, development, security, and maintenance of campus-wide computing infrastructure, focusing on operating systems and application support, scripting and programming, performance and security monitoring, and architecture and design review. This role requires a proactive approach to managing and optimizing systems, ensuring high availability and security of services, and providing technical support to staff.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure operating system software is properly installed, tested, and tuned for maximum efficiency.
  • Develop and implement plans for integrated systems including operating systems, network systems, and applications in VMware and AWS.
  • Install, configure, and tune operating systems software for optimal performance.
  • Provide escalated technical support to staff, including on-site and telephone support.
  • Prepare reports summarizing departmental technical activities.
  • Respond to inquiries from staff outside of normal business hours as needed.
  • Plan and implement modifications and upgrades to system configurations based on application and production requirements.
  • Develop scripts and programs to automate campus services and user management tasks.
  • Conduct analytical studies of system processing time and resource capacity to improve performance and security.
  • Monitor security bulletins and assess the criticality of security patches.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience.
  • Ability to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and compatible distributions.
  • Ability to automate tasks in shell scripting languages such as bash, Perl, or Python.
  • Knowledge of modern operating system theory and operation, especially Linux and Windows.
  • Ability to debug complex technical problems with operating systems, applications, and networks.
  • Ability to manage AWS infrastructure, including Elastic Load Balancers and EC2 instances.
  • Ability to implement and support Linux-based authentication and SSO platforms.
