About the position

The Linux Systems Administrator will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing a Linux-based IT environment, with additional responsibilities in Windows systems. This role requires deep expertise in Linux administration, troubleshooting across various operating systems, and contributing to system design and development. The administrator will implement automation strategies and ensure the reliability and security of computing resources.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer Linux systems, including RedHat Enterprise Linux and related technologies like VMware.
  • Design and maintain core operating system builds, implement system-wide software installations, and manage storage allocations.
  • Develop and deploy automation scripts using tools such as Ansible and PowerShell/Bash.
  • Monitor system performance, conduct capacity planning, and perform system tuning as needed.
  • Coordinate with vendors, evaluate new products, and oversee installation and integration into existing systems.
  • Serve as a point of escalation for major incidents, providing timely resolution and support beyond the helpdesk level.
  • Implement and enforce IT policies and standards for resource allocation and usage.
  • Collaborate effectively within a small team environment to achieve IT infrastructure goals and support additional technologies as adopted.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline with 5+ years of hands-on experience in Linux system administration.
  • Proficiency in networking protocols (i.e., TCP/IP, DNS, NTP, SSH, FTP, and HTTP/S) and centralized authentication (i.e., SSSD, IDM, and Active Directory).
  • Strong scripting skills in languages like Ansible, Shell Scripting, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (i.e., VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vSAN) and enterprise tools such as RedHat Satellite and Splunk.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues across multiple operating systems including Windows.
  • Familiarity with system security practices, vulnerability remediation, and compliance standards (i.e., STIGs and RMF).
  • Certification(s) in relevant disciplines such as Red Hat, VMWare, CompTIA Security+, or CISSP is desired.
  • Experience with classified IT systems and security clearances (Secret or above) is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Mac administration, network administration, and directory services (i.e., Active Directory and LDAP) is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and procedure development.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet changing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
