About the position

The Linux Systems Engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is responsible for managing and supporting Linux server environments and large storage systems. This role focuses on maintaining system health, analyzing performance, and ensuring compliance with customer requirements. The position is part of the Research IT Infrastructure group, which supports ORNL's research community through robust systems engineering and integration.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, configure, and maintain Linux server environments, including Red Hat, Rocky, and Ubuntu.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring high availability and stability.
  • Perform regular system updates, patches, and backups.
  • Install and maintain various software solutions, including commercial and open-source packages (e.g., Apache, MySQL, Postgres, PHP, ZFS).
  • Implement and support virtualization solutions (e.g., VMware, KVM) for Linux environments.
  • Design and manage storage solutions relevant to Linux systems, ensuring data integrity and availability.
  • Implement containerization technologies, Docker, Kubernetes.
  • Implement and maintain security best practices for Linux systems.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and standards.
  • Provide advanced support and troubleshooting for Linux-based systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve technical issues and provide recommendations for system improvements.
  • Deliver high-quality customer service, both internally and externally.
  • Lead or participate in projects related to Linux infrastructure, from design to implementation.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all system configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently.

Requirements

  • A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study.
  • A minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of Linux server administration experience.
  • Experience managing VMware clusters and NAS storage systems.
  • Proficiency in scripting with BASH and Python.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GPU, SLURM and other HPC environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD support and container administration.
  • Deep familiarity with Red Hat Linux operating systems and monitoring tools like Nagios.
  • Knowledge of open-source web application services like Apache and Nginx.
  • Prior experience in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, suitable for user support and effective teamwork.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced research environment.
