About the position

The Linux/VMWare Administrator position is a full-time role focused on architecting and maintaining the infrastructure for a growing company in Syracuse, NY. The role involves working with a team of IT professionals to manage VMware and Linux operating systems, automate tasks, and provide support for system infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Linux administration and VMware, along with strong automation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain VMware environments including host installation and configuration, guest provisioning, and maintenance activities.
  • Manage storage network administration and maintenance.
  • Perform system administration tasks including performance tuning, monitoring, and maintaining fault tolerance.
  • Install and support operating systems, applying service packs, and monitoring performance.
  • Provide end-user support for server and network infrastructure.
  • Proactively monitor server systems for uptime, failover, and security threats.
  • Maintain and support backups for servers and clients.
  • Participate in long-term IT strategies and planning.
  • Write tools and scripts to aid the team in automation and efficiency.
  • Receive, rack, cable, and install new systems for service.
  • Be on-call as needed to support the team.
  • Support miscellaneous systems as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant work experience and/or relevant certifications.
  • At least 7 years of experience as a Linux Administrator.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Chef or Puppet.
  • Familiarity with server-related technologies like RAID systems, backups, and SAN.
  • Expert level experience with VMware.
  • Security experience with local/networked file systems, IPSEC, VPN, and SAMBA.
  • Demonstrated experience with performance monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Scripting and/or automation skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP, IP routing, SSH/SFTP/SCP, DNS, NFS, LDAP, FTP, SMTP, and NIS.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
