About the position

Meyers Nave is seeking a full-time Litigation Assistant/Paralegal to join our Labor and Employment Group in San Diego, CA. This nonexempt position will report directly to the Director of Administration and is integral to our robust litigation practice, which focuses on defending employers in various legal matters. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing case files from inception through trial or settlement, ensuring that all legal documents are drafted, reviewed, and formatted according to applicable court rules. This role requires a proactive approach to case management, including maintaining case files, updating charts and indices, and supporting witness summaries and document productions. The Litigation Assistant/Paralegal will also assist with deposition and hearing preparations, including gathering exhibit documents and creating witness outlines. In addition to case management, the position involves extensive document processing, requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills. The candidate must be adept at drafting and formatting court pleadings, generating tables of authorities and tables of contents, and understanding federal and state court rules. The role also demands superior organizational skills for effective calendaring practices, ensuring attorneys are aware of upcoming deadlines. Proficiency in various software packages, including MS Office, iManage, and eDiscovery applications, is essential for success in this position. The Litigation Assistant/Paralegal will be expected to perform litigation support duties such as Bates stamping exhibits, preparing spreadsheets, and ensuring accurate calendaring of litigation dockets. This position requires the ability to work efficiently under pressure, maintain composure in high-energy situations, and provide excellent customer support while managing multiple projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong ethical foundation, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. The role may require extended hours and occasional travel for case support, emphasizing the need for flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic legal environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Labor and Employment Group in managing litigation cases from inception through trial or settlement.
  • Draft, review, and format legal documents according to applicable court rules.
  • Maintain case files and update charts and indices.
  • Assist with deposition and hearing preparation, including gathering exhibit documents and creating witness outlines.
  • Cite-check briefs, including both legal and factual citations.
  • Coordinate with the Litigation Support Group for back-end database management using eDiscovery applications.
  • Perform document processing tasks such as Bates stamping exhibits and hyperlinking PDFs.
  • Manage calendaring practices to keep attorneys informed of upcoming deadlines.
  • Obtain case-related documents informally from third parties and coordinate among vendors for litigation support services.
  • Perform detailed entry of billable time and work extended hours as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to work and bill as a paralegal under Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code section 6450.
  • Minimum of five years of recent experience working as a California paralegal with a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Strong Office365 skills, particularly in Word, Excel, iManage, and CompuLaw.
  • Strong legal research database skills and experience with Westlaw and/or Lexis.
  • Understanding and knowledge of legal procedures, rules of court, and local rules.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well under stress.
  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no direction and effectively function in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high ethical standards and strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks under time constraints.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 5 years of California civil litigation experience in litigation (law and motion), including document management, drafting, and revising pleadings, discovery, and trial preparation.
  • Trial experience helpful.
