About the position

Lewis Johs Avallone Aviles, LLP, recognized in the 2025 edition of U.S. News - Best Lawyers "Best Law Firms" for the 15th consecutive year in both Medical Malpractice Law and Personal Injury Litigation - Defendants, is expanding its General Liability defense team. We are currently seeking a professional Litigation Paralegal to join our legal team. This position is based at our office located at 1377 Motor Parkway, Islandia, NY 11749. As a Litigation Paralegal, you will play a crucial role in supporting our attorneys throughout all phases of the litigation process. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who possesses strong organizational skills and a passion for the legal field. In this role, you will assist attorneys from case inception through trial preparation. Your responsibilities will include drafting pleadings, bills of particulars, and responses to discovery demands and court orders. You will also be responsible for retaining experts for file reviews, preparing pertinent materials, and assisting in the preparation of summary judgment motions, discovery demands/responses, and motions. Additionally, you will conduct file reviews and document inventories, summarize medical records, and perform legal research to gather relevant information. Coordination with clients, witnesses, and opposing counsel will also be a key part of your duties. You will be expected to review and proofread legal documents for accuracy and completeness while maintaining the confidentiality of client information. Utilizing document management systems to organize and store case files, e-filing, and digesting depositions will also be part of your responsibilities. Finally, you will assist with trial preparation, ensuring that all necessary materials are ready and organized for court proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys in all phases of litigation, from case inception to trial preparation.
  • Draft pleadings, bills of particulars, and responses to discovery demands and court orders.
  • Retain experts for review files and prepare pertinent materials and 3101(d) disclosures.
  • Assist in preparation of summary judgment motions, discovery demands/responses, and motions.
  • Conduct file reviews and document inventories.
  • Review and summarize medical records.
  • Conduct legal research and gather relevant information.
  • Coordinate with clients, witnesses, and opposing counsel.
  • Review and proofread legal documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • Utilize document management systems to organize and store case files.
  • E-file documents as required.
  • Digest depositions and assist with trial preparation.

Requirements

  • Paralegal Certificate is preferred.
  • Proven experience working as a Paralegal in a litigation setting.
  • Strong familiarity with litigation experience.
  • Familiarity with medical malpractice and/or personal injury.
  • Proficient in using document management systems and legal software.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent proofreading and editing abilities.
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Excellent typing skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to conduct independent investigation and problem solve.
  • Friendly and outgoing demeanor.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to learn new tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with general liability and medical malpractice is preferred but not required.
  • Relevant work experience will also be considered.
