About the position

The Litigation Paralegal at J.B. Hunt Transport plays a crucial role in supporting litigation counsel by managing various legal tasks and ensuring the smooth operation of legal processes. This position operates under general supervision and is responsible for assisting with routine legal issues, conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and handling administrative tasks related to litigation. The paralegal will maintain databases for claim management, track litigation deadlines, and manage records of expenses associated with legal cases. In this role, the paralegal will assist in the discovery process by reviewing and drafting initial documents and responses to be sent to outside counsel. They will also collect relevant factual information from internal databases to support litigation efforts. The position requires maintaining the Claim Management System databases, which involves recording new lawsuits and assigning appropriate coding and flags to ensure accurate tracking of cases. Additionally, the paralegal will conduct initial claims investigations and gather legal sources such as statutes and judicial decisions to aid litigation counsel in preparing executive summaries and legal documents. The Litigation Paralegal will also be responsible for maintaining active litigation calendars, ensuring that all trials, mediations, and settlement conferences are tracked and deadlines are met. They will notify litigation administration of any concerns regarding litigation files and assist in processing expense invoices, including filing for claim expense reimbursement from insurance carriers. The role may also involve maintaining records of unbilled expenses and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring that all financial aspects of litigation are accurately documented. Overall, this position is integral to the legal department's operations, requiring a detail-oriented individual who can manage multiple tasks efficiently while supporting the legal team in achieving favorable outcomes in litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the discovery process through reviewing and drafting initial documents and answers to be sent to outside counsel and collecting relevant factual information from internal databases.
  • Respond to routine correspondence from internal and external parties following established procedures not requiring management review.
  • Maintain Claim Management System databases through recording new lawsuits and assigning appropriate coding and system flags.
  • Conduct initial claims investigations and collect law sources for litigation counsel such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes for preparation of executive summaries and legal documents.
  • Maintain active litigation calendars for trials, mediation, settlement conferences, and other legal deadlines.
  • Notify litigation administration about concerns on litigation files.
  • Assist in processing expense invoices and filing for claim expense reimbursement from excess and surplus lines insurance carriers.
  • Maintain records of unbilled expenses, accounts receivable transaction entries, and payments received.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field; 1-2 years of related experience and/or training OR equivalent combination of education, experience, or military equivalent.
  • Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret information to form decisions.
  • Ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas through various mediums.
  • Knowledge of approaches and techniques for recognizing and resolving problems.
