About the position

The LoBoS System Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day management of the LoBoS high-performance computing (HPC) cluster, ensuring its operational integrity and security compliance. This role involves collaborating with a small team to maintain the cluster's usability, manage hardware and software updates, and support researchers in their computational biophysics and chemistry investigations. The position requires a strong background in Linux systems administration and the ability to address technical challenges as they arise.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the LoBoS HPC compute nodes, storage systems, and desktops.
  • Ensure the cluster follows security best practices as determined by NIH and Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Maintain the usability of the LoBoS cluster through hardware purchases and installations.
  • Oversee network configuration, firewall management, file system management, and security.
  • Manage batch queuing systems, database administration, and file transfer services.
  • Collaborate with various teams to ensure compliance with policies and security controls.
  • Evaluate existing systems for necessary updates and upgrades.
  • Manage the budget for procuring new hardware and software.
  • Prepare software documentation and technical reports related to assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or Associates degree plus two years of additional experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
  • At least seven years of experience in Linux HPC systems administration.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shell scripting.
  • Broad knowledge of systems administration tools such as Puppet and Ansible.
  • Detailed knowledge of file system management, usage accounting, mail configuration, and database system administration.
  • Knowledge of high-level computer languages such as C, C++, FORTRAN, Ruby, Perl, or Python.
  • Experience implementing and managing SLURM batch queueing software preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with government computer security rules and standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of at least two high-level computer languages such as C, C++, FORTRAN, Ruby, Perl, or Python.
  • Solid interpersonal, leadership, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
